h̸e̸m̸ was founded in 2012 in Berlin. It was re-launched in 2022, and is now mainly active in Paris, Brussels, Kraków, and Kyiv. It inherits a substantial archive of live recordings and first editions from the American nonprofit indie record label, Human Ear Music, from which it should be considered a distinct entity.
h̸e̸m̸ is pronounced however. The letters do not stand for anything. Since October 2024 it is spelled all-lowercase with combining long solidus overlay. Typing "hem" is ok.
